How To

How to stain wood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. The most common type of wood used for staining is oak, although many other types of wood can be stained.

You can apply wood stains in many different ways. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Some methods involve a mixture of water and dye that is applied directly to the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. To apply the stain, clean the wood completely. Sanding the wood removes scratches and imperfections. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper than non-penetrating stains, which makes them great for dark colors like mahogany. The best non-penetrating colors are those that work with light colors like maple.

After you've decided what type of stain to apply, get ready for your tools. Paintbrushes are great for applying stain because they allow you to evenly spread the liquid across the surface. A few rags are also handy to clean up any spillages after you have finished painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared your materials for staining, clean the area. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Next, spray the stain. Apply the stain by brushing or spraying it onto one side of the furniture. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. Keep the stain from dripping off the wood's surface. Allow the stain to dry completely before you move on to the next step.

To protect the painted surface, apply a coat of clear polyurethane sealant. Three coats of polyurethane sealing agent are required. Allow the third coat of polyurethane sealer to dry overnight before applying the final coat.
