How To

How to join wood with no nails

Woodworking is an enjoyable hobby. Woodworking is a relaxing hobby that allows you to use your hands to create useful things from wood. However, there are times when you want to join two pieces of wood together without having to use nails. This article will explain how to do this so that your woodwork projects stay beautiful.

The first thing you'll need to do is cut off any rough edges from your pieces of wood before joining them together. Do not leave any sharp corners as they could cause problems down in the future. After you have completed this step, you are ready to glue your boards together.

When working with hardwood, glue should be applied only to one side. For softwoods like cedar and pine, glue should be applied to both sides. Once you have applied the glue, press down on the boards until they are fully attached. Before you proceed to the next step, be sure to let the glue dry completely.

Once you've glued your boards together you will need to drill holes in the joints to accommodate screws. You can choose the type of screw to determine the size of your holes. If you plan to use a 1/2 inch wood screw, drill a hole at least 3/4 inches in depth.

Once you've drilled your holes, you'll want to drive the screws through the joint and into the backside of the board. Do not hit the boards' front surfaces. It will ruin the finish. Don't drive the screws too far into the end. This will prevent the wood from splitting.

Now that your project is finished, you'll want to protect it from the elements. You have two options: seal the whole furniture piece or just the top. Either way, you'll want to use a product that will last for years to come. Oil-based varnishes are, among others, polyurethanes shellac, laquer, and other oil-based products.

These products can be found in most home improvement shops. Be sure to choose the right one for your project. Some finishes are toxic and should not ever be used indoors. So, always wear protective gear when handling them.
