How To

How to join two pieces of wood together without nails

Woodworking is a hobby that many people enjoy doing. It's fun and relaxing because you can use your hands to make something useful from wood. You might want to join two pieces from the same wood, but you don't need to use nails. This article will demonstrate how to do so to preserve the beauty of your woodwork.

You will first need to trim the edges of your wood pieces before joining them. You don't want any sharp corners to cause problems later. Once you have done that, you can begin gluing your boards together.

You should only glue one side of hardwood. Use glue on both the sides for softwoods, such as cedar or pine. After applying the glue, press the boards firmly until they are completely stuck together. Make sure you let the glue dry before moving on to the next step.

After you've glued your boards, you'll want to drill holes into the joints where you plan to insert screws. These holes will differ depending on the type and size of screw you are using. For example, if your screw is a 1/2-inch wooden screw, drill a hole that is at minimum 3/4 inches deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Be careful not to hit the front surface of the board, or else you'll ruin the finish. When driving the screws, try to avoid hitting the ends of the screws too much. This will prevent splitting the wood's end grain.

Protect your finished project now. To do this, you can seal the entire furniture piece or just cover the top. You'll want a product that lasts for many years. Examples include oil-based varnishes and polyurethanes, shellac, lacquer and others.

These products can generally be found in any home improvement shop. Make sure you get the right product for your job. Don't forget to keep in mind that some finishes are toxic. Always wear protective gear when handling any of these finishes.
