wood carving with a knife

Practice on some basic hand-held planes to learn how to use handplanes. A smoothing plane is a great example. Smoothing planes are used to make curves and edges. Combination planes are also a popular choice for a woodworking project. You can also purchase a low-angle adjustable-mouth block plane and a jack plane. Learn more about handplanes by reading on!

Smoothing plane

While a good smoothing tool will be able to handle most woodworking tasks, some jobs require a hand plane. A smoothing plane with a good tuning will give you a smooth surface. To use this type of plane effectively, you should have a solid body position and a steady downward pressure. There are many different types of smoothing boards, but for beginners you can use a metal one.

Combination plane

The Lee Valley Veritas combination plane is a modern version of the Stanley #45 combination airplane, which was made between 1884 and 1962. This hand plane was advertised as having seven functions: beading, plowing groove, creating dado or rebate housing, and even planed the sash of a window. The Veritas will accept blades of both planes and makes a fine alternative.

Jack plane

No matter if you are an experienced or novice woodworker, the simplest ways to use your jack plane will be useful. Two irons are used in a jackplan. The large iron is used for smoothing out thick, narrow pieces. Each iron has a slightly different shape, and one iron is cambered to scoop out the deepest piece of wood. A second iron is used for smoothing the surface and to loosen edges.

Block plane with adjustable mouth and low angle

A low-angle adjustable-mouth block plane is similar to the #60 Stanley block planer, but does not have a fully adjustable mouth. It is equipped with a front knob made from turned rosewood. The #60 model has an adjustable mouth, which is a big difference to the #9 1/4 model. It generally doesn't have a high value and isn't worth much. While a Stanley block plane of good quality can last a lifetime it is also not highly valuable.

Grooving plane

A grooving plan, also known by the name "plough plane", is a woodworking instrument used to cut grooves. It is used to cut narrow irons. Some are as small as 3mm (1/8") across. It can also be used to cut grooves into housing joints such as the one at the end of a shelf unit. For large furniture pieces, a special groove-making plane was used.

How To

How to stain wooden surfaces

Staining wood refers to applying chemicals to wood's surface. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change in color. The wood will turn from white to brownish-red due to the chemical reaction. While oak is the most widely used type of wood for staining purposes, other types of wood are also available.

There are many methods to apply stain to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

Preparing your wood for staining is the first thing to do. You must clean the wood well to remove any grease or dirt that might interfere with the application of the stain. Sanding can smoothen out scratches and uneven spots. You must then decide on the type of stain that you wish to use. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

After you've decided what type of stain to apply, get ready for your tools. A paintbrush works well for applying stains because it allows you to spread the liquid evenly across the surface. After you're done painting, make sure to have some rags handy to remove any excess stain. If you are planning to mix your stain, ensure you have enough containers for each component.

After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. Take care to remove all debris and dirt, especially if you are planning on staining darker wood.

Next, spray the stain. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. Make sure that the stain does not drip off the edge of the wood. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

Apply a clear polyurethane sealant to protect the painted surface. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Let the third coat dry overnight before you sand the final coat.
